AI is opening up the real-world data market
A new Health Advances report argues that real-world data has grown from a small group of proprietary datasets into a broad market spanning life sciences, providers, payers, advertising, and financial services. Large players like IQVIA, Optum, Veeva, Komodo Health, and HealthVerity now compete alongside more specialized companies such as Tempus, ConcertAI, Truveta, PurpleLab, and others.
AI is changing how these businesses operate. Historically, companies relied on large teams to manually read charts and extract details such as disease progression, biomarker status, treatments, and outcomes. Companies are using NLP and foundation models to clean and standardize data, pull biomarkers, disease progression, lines of therapy, and outcomes from clinical notes, and reduce the time and cost of manual chart abstraction. Tools from companies like Tempus and ConcertAI can now automate more of that work, making datasets faster and cheaper to build.
The supply of data is also expanding. The report points to roughly 50 core administrative sources and nearly 500 linked clinical, lab, imaging, and demographic sources in the Datavant ecosystem. Claims may show that a treatment happened, while notes, labs, and imaging help explain why and whether it worked.
The next winners will be the companies that can connect those sources, accurately match patient records, and turn messy data into evidence trusted for research and regulatory use. The market is broadening, leaving room for new entrants in oncology, neurology, behavioral health, and AI-driven drug development. (link)(linkedin)

$811B in annual healthcare savings from AI
A new NEJM Catalyst paper estimates that full adoption of generative AI, natural language processing, and machine learning could create $439B to $811B in annual net value within five years (~5-10% of total US healthcare spending). The authors built the estimate from implementation benchmarks across 12 operating domains, then applied those savings ranges to 2024 national spending.
Private payers had the largest dollar opportunity, with $205B to $357B in annual value. Most of that came from medical spending, such as predicting avoidable readmissions, improving prior authorization decisions, raising claims auto-adjudication, and reducing fraud, waste, and abuse.
Hospitals followed at $131B to $220B, with the biggest gains coming from clinical operations, led by use cases such as OR block optimization, workforce productivity, staffing, and supply-chain management. Quality and safety added another meaningful share.
Public payers could capture $62B to $107B from applying AI tools to Medicare and Medicaid operations, including care management, provider oversight, and claims workflows.
Physician groups had $29B to $90B of opportunity, with the biggest gains coming from clinical operations. Missed-visit prediction, documentation, workflow support, continuity of care, and clinical analytics were the main areas.
Across the system, medical expense savings equalled 70% of the value and admin savings made up 30%. Gen AI-led use cases made up over 50% of the total opportunity, largely through documentation, summarization, call centers, patient communications, claims workflows, and other labor-heavy processes. The estimate is ambitious and excludes one-time implementation costs, but this analysis still offers a useful view of where the largest ROI is likely to come from first. (link)(linkedin)

Digital health funding narrows around a few big bets
Digital health funding cooled sharply in Q2, and the headline dollars hide how concentrated the market has become. Global deal volume fell 36% QoQ to 228, the lowest level in more than a decade, while funding dropped 24% to $5.7B.
Just 10 mega-rounds captured 60% of all capital. Isomorphic Labs raised $2.1B, accounting for 37% of the quarter and more than 5X Chai Discovery’s $400M round. AI drug discovery did much of the heavy lifting. Europe reached $2.5B in funding, though $2.2B came from only two mega-rounds.
Investors are also writing fewer, larger checks. The median deal size rose 54% to $7.7M in 2026 YTD, while early-stage rounds reached a $4.8M median. Unicorn creation fell from eight in Q1 to one in Q2, which was voice AI company Assort Health.
The market still has plenty of capital, but bets are starting to consolidate into perceived winners. (link)
