Healthcare is becoming AI’s legitimacy test

A surprisingly substantive debate around Anthropic broke out over the weekend after Gavin Baker shared a rumor that Dario Amodei had privately imagined Anthropic becoming the only major private company left. Anthropic’s Sholto Douglas called the claim “completely false,” but the conversation quickly widened into a bigger argument over AI power, regulatory capture, open models, and public trust.

Baker and David Sacks worry that heavy frontier regulation could leave a handful of labs and government agencies controlling the best models. Baker also pointed to Mark Zuckerberg’s recent case for broadly distributed AI. Amodei sees it differently: frontier AI is already concentrated because compute, chips, and capital are scarce, and he believes carefully designed rules can constrain the biggest labs while still leaving room for challengers. Sholto added that the risks may vary by domain, with biology potentially deserving far more scrutiny.

The messaging debate matters too. Baker thinks years of warnings around jobs, catastrophic risk, energy, and data centers have soured public sentiment. Amodei’s response was that better marketing will not fix that. AI companies need to deliver.

That puts healthcare squarely in the spotlight. Amodei has argued AI could help cure most diseases within 5 to 10 years, while Anthropic is reportedly planning a harder push into healthcare and biology ahead of its IPO.

Cure disease. Accelerate science. Improve care. Make expertise cheaper and more available.

Don’t sleep on Google

Google’s AMIE is moving from text into real-time video visits, and the results are striking.

Across 100 simulated telehealth scenarios, AMIE scored 83% vs. 68% for board-certified PCPs overall, including 91% vs. 77% on diagnostic accuracy and 74% vs. 47% on perception and examination. Its system handles conversation, clinical reasoning, and visual/audio cues at the same time, while guiding patients through parts of a virtual exam.

There are obvious caveats. These were patient actors, AMIE still missed subtle findings like tremor and affect, and humans were preferred for rapport.

Still, the potential is huge. A multimodal system could eventually meet a patient through the phone in their pocket, pull in their medical context, listen, watch, reason across everything at once, and provide a first-pass assessment from almost anywhere.

Google is also starting to connect that intelligence to action. A new Gemini-Zocdoc integration lets users go from discussing a health concern to finding and booking an in-network provider across Zocdoc’s network of 200,000+ clinicians.

Commure’s $7B growth machine comes under scrutiny

A new STAT investigation took a deep look at Commure, the $7B health AI company that has raised more than $850M and says its products are used by 500+ healthcare organizations, including 130 major health systems.

Commure is less one product than a roll-up of healthcare software companies. Its stack now spans revenue cycle, scheduling, ambient documentation, patient navigation, care coordination, and an AI-native EHR called Air. Much of that came through acquisitions including Athelas, Augmedix, Memora Health, PatientKeeper, Rx.Health, and others.

The biggest concern is its referral strategy. One clinic contract included a $750K new-business referral target and a potential $66K fee for missing it, while affiliate partners could earn 2% of contracts they helped bring in customers. Former federal prosecutors told STAT some arrangements could raise anti-kickback concerns. Commure says its referral practices are industry standard.

Customer results were also all over the map. Customer results were mixed too. One clinic said it fell $500K behind on collections, while another reported a 40% increase after nearly a year of integration work.

The broader issue here goes beyond Commure. As health AI companies race to grow, customers need a clearer way to separate genuine product performance from a well-funded, aggressive sales, incentives, and marketing machine. (link)
